Types of Industrial Rubber & Elastomers

Rubber is not one size fits all. There are many different material types, each with unique physical properties, chemical resistance, and operating temperature ranges. Understanding the differences helps engineers and purchasers select the optimal material for their specific equipment and working conditions.

We manufacture custom parts from a wide range of industrial elastomers, including NBR, EPDM, SEBS, Silicone, and Polyurethane.

Elastomer Technical Specifications & Material Properties

  • Nitrile Rubber (NBR)

    • Operating Temperature: -30°C to +100°C
    • Properties: The industry-standard primary choice for applications involving oils, mineral greases, fuels, and hydrocarbons. Offers low compression set and high mechanical toughness.
    • Standard Plant Hardness: 60 and 75 Shore A.
    • Primary Uses: Hydraulic seals, oil seals, gaskets, fuel system components.
  • Silicone (VMQ)

    • Operating Temperature: -50°C to +200°C
    • Properties: Exceptional stability under extreme high and low temperatures. Non-toxic, food-grade / sanitary FDA compliant, excellent electrical insulator, and superior elastic memory.
    • Standard Plant Hardness: 30 and 40 Shore A (soft, highly flexible).
    • Primary Uses: Food-grade seals, high-temperature gaskets, soft bellows, medical/sanitary components.
  • EPDM Rubber

    • Operating Temperature: -40°C to +100°C
    • Properties: High-density synthetic rubber with outstanding resistance to outdoor weathering, sunlight, ozone, UV radiation, hot water, steam, and diluted chemicals.
    • Standard Plant Hardness: 35 and 60 Shore A.
    • Primary Uses: Weatherstripping, valve seats, glazing profiles, outdoor seals, HVAC gaskets.
  • Technical Polyurethane (PU)

    • Operating Temperature: -35°C to +110°C
    • Properties: Exceptional resistance to abrasion, wear, and impacts (5 to 6 times higher wear resistance than natural rubber). Outstanding load-bearing capacity and cut resistance.
    • Hardness Range: 40 to 90 Shore A.
    • Primary Uses: Wipers, pinions, heavy-duty rollers, couplings, heavy industrial sleeves, impact pads.
  • SEBS Rubber (Thermoplastic Elastomer)

    • Operating Temperature: -40°C to +90°C
    • Properties: Excellent resistance to UV, weather, and ozone. Thermoplastic flexibility with soft-touch feel and good impact damping.

Environmental & Safety Commitment: Policy on Viton (FKM)

At PrimeGomaTech, we adhere to a strict environmental sustainability policy. We do not process Viton (FKM) in our manufacturing facilities because the vulcanization and thermal recycling of fluorocarbon compounds release bioaccumulative and toxic fluorinated byproducts into the environment.

To fulfill high-demanding application requirements without environmental hazards, we offer safe, high-performance alternatives such as High-Temperature Silicone (+200°C), Technical Polyurethane, or NBR Nitrile.

Quick Material Selection Guide by Application Exposure

  • Contact with Oils, Fuels, Greases & Solvents: Use NBR (Nitrile Rubber)
  • Outdoor Weathering, Ozone & UV Exposure: Use EPDM / SEBS
  • Food Contact & FDA Sanitary Requirements: Use Silicone / EPDM (Sanitary Grade)
  • High Mechanical Loads, Severe Abrasion & Impact: Use Technical Polyurethane (PU)

Physicochemical Comparison Matrix

Material Temperature Range Oil Resistance Weather / UV Resistance Abrasion Resistance Shore A Hardness
Nitrile (NBR) -30°C to +100°C Excellent Moderate Good 60 & 75 Shore A
Silicone (VMQ) -50°C to +200°C Moderate Excellent Moderate 30 & 40 Shore A
EPDM / SEBS -40°C to +100°C Not Recommended Excellent Good 35 & 60 Shore A
Polyurethane (PU) -35°C to +110°C Excellent Good Outstanding (5x) 40 to 90 Shore A
